But it isn't his duty, anyway. He doesn't know what the mourning duties are, what they would be in anyone else's world ... and this is another cultural tradition he can dwell on. A celebration.

He's been standing and holding the pamphlet for a while, before he realizes he's been asked a question. It's not that he didn't hear it; he simply forgot to give the appropriate reaction.
